BRITAIN’S STICKY PRICE BLUES

Grass Monster, June 17, 2025

GRASSMONSTER SAYS:
INFLATION REFUSES TO BUDGE – BRITAIN’S STICKY PRICE BLUES

Like that one relative who overstays their welcome at Sunday tea, inflation in Britain just won’t leave. Despite hopes that prices might finally cool down, the latest data shows that the average Brit still feels the pinch, with expected inflation clinging stubbornly to 3.2%.

That’s higher than many were hoping for, especially after a brief flirtation with economic optimism earlier in the year. Back in April, the Consumer Prices Index dropped to 3.5%, and government figures smiled like the job was done. But no – the public, who actually live in the shops, the petrol stations, and the utility bills, remain unconvinced.

And it’s not just about headline numbers. Behind those percentages are real consequences. Bread, butter, bins, bus fares – it all adds up. And while energy prices have dipped, food and services remain expensive, with families feeling like they’re in a permanent game of “guess the price” every time they walk into a supermarket.

The Bank of England now finds itself playing a frustrating waiting game. Cut interest rates too soon, and prices could spike. Hold them too long, and growth could wither. For now, it’s sticking with its high-interest stance, hoping inflation will behave if ignored long enough.

Meanwhile, small businesses are reporting that price pressures are eating into margins, and workers, while grateful for modest wage increases, are still chasing the ghost of real buying power.

Politicians, of course, claim it’s all “transitory” – a word now so abused by economists it should come with a trigger warning. But for millions, this isn’t theory – it’s dinner.

What Britain faces now is inflation not as a monster, but as a mildly irritating lodger, squatting quietly in every receipt and eating away at household confidence.

It may not crash the economy, but it will gnaw at its foundations, until either policy shifts or the weather – financial or otherwise – finally changes.
