The United Kingdom has just shut the door on one of the most disturbing cracks in its justice system.

In a decisive move announced by Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, the government has confirmed that “consent” will no longer be accepted as a legal defence when an adult is charged with raping a child under 16. The announcement forms part of a larger sweep of legal reforms aimed at strengthening child protection laws and, crucially, restoring public trust after years of scandal.

Because let’s not dance around this: for far too long, predators have been slipping through the gaps. Lawyers, armed with technicalities and twisted logic, have stood in court and argued that children “agreed” to sex. Let that appalling sentence sink in. A grown adult, standing before a judge, claiming that a child consented to being raped. And worse still, the law – in its ambiguity – sometimes tolerated the argument.

Not anymore.

This change means the moment a child is proven to be under 16, any sexual act by an adult becomes rape. Full stop. No excuses. No defence of ‘they said yes.’

This reform arrives alongside the government’s commitment to a National Inquiry into Grooming Gangs, a long-awaited move given the systemic failures in towns like Rotherham, Rochdale, and Telford. The inquiry will finally aim to expose how institutional cowardice, fear of cultural tension, and political apathy allowed organised abuse to thrive unchecked for years.

And let us be clear – victims, most of them young girls, were not failed by individual bad apples. They were failed by entire orchards: councils, police forces, social services. The system looked away, and some still are.

By removing the “consent” defence from child rape cases, the government is now doing what should have been done decades ago – asserting in law what should have been obvious in morality: that children cannot agree to be exploited.

It’s a legal correction, yes. But it’s also a reckoning. And one that’s long, long overdue.
