BRITAIN STRIKES BIGGEST DEAL YET WITH TRUMP’S AMERICA

GRASSMONSTER SAYS:

STAR-MERKEL IN THE MAKING? BRITAIN STRIKES BIGGEST DEAL YET WITH TRUMP’S AMERICA

Well, who’d have thought it? A Labour Prime Minister and a Republican firebrand shaking hands across the Atlantic like old pub mates over a scotch egg and a pint. But that’s precisely what unfolded this week when Keir Starmer and Donald J. Trump finalised what may be the most economically meaningful US–UK trade agreement in decades – ironically wrapped in the flag of Brexit and tied with a Labour rosette.

The venue? The G7 summit, where suits outnumber sense and photographers outnumber facts. Amid the sound of cutlery and clapping, Starmer and Trump agreed to slash tariffs on British car exports to the U.S. from 27.5% to just 10%, with the first 100,000 vehicles getting this discounted route straight into American driveways.

Not content with the bonnet alone, the pair also cooked up open pathways for UK beef, ethanol, and aerospace components. Picture that – British steak on Texan plates, Yorkshire-built fuselage bits under Californian skies, and ethanol distilled somewhere between Lincolnshire and Leith, powering lawnmowers in Ohio.

Steel and aluminium? Still in the oven. Negotiators on both sides are pressing harder than a full English breakfast to get a deal done. But for now, the trade winds are shifting, and Britain – long sneered at for being adrift post-Brexit – has found itself a lifeline from across the pond.

What makes this especially juicy is the spectacle: Trump, ever the pageant-king, dropped the signed agreement in front of the cameras. Starmer, poker-faced as ever, picked it up like a man retrieving his dignity from a puddle. It was either comic theatre or a carefully choreographed metaphor, depending on which paper you read.

This is not a done chapter. The UK auto industry is cautiously hopeful; unions are sharpening their pencils; and US election-watchers are bracing for Trump to add this deal to his “Greatest Hits” playlist if he’s re-elected.

Still, in a world where politics often resembles a child’s finger painting – loud, chaotic, and best kept off the fridge – this was a rare moment of colour between the lines.
