SUN’S OUT, SHADES ON – BRITAIN’S BRIEF LOVE AFFAIR WITH SUMMER BEGINS

After a spring that could only be described as “a binbag of drizzle,” the UK is finally set to receive the kind of weather that doesn’t demand a parka, umbrella, and a backup plan. Yes, believe it or not, Britain is about to warm up.

Thanks to a pleasant meteorological phenomenon known as the Azores High, a wave of warm, dry air is drifting over from the Atlantic like a polite tourist, bringing clear skies, golden sunshine, and a whiff of optimism.

Forecasters suggest temperatures could hit 29°C in the south and low-to-mid 20s elsewhere, though if you live in Glasgow, you may still need to ask your cardigan to hang around a bit longer. This isn’t quite a “heatwave” – that official label needs three days of scorching highs – but it’s enough to set off a national shortage of ice cubes, Calippos, and sunburn cream.

The British people, seasoned experts in meteorological disappointment, will no doubt treat this with a mix of suspicion and sunburn. Pubs will overflow, supermarkets will run out of burgers, and there will be at least one rogue individual who insists it’s hot enough to sleep in the garden “for the vibe.”

But alongside the jubilation lies a familiar tale – no trains are built for heat, no offices have working fans, and Brits remain unsure how to dress when it’s over 20 degrees. Socks with sandals? Shirt off in Tesco? Bikini in Basingstoke? All likely.

Still, this rare bit of sunshine should be cherished. It might only last a week – or a weekend – before the heavens dump a thunderstorm just to remind us who’s in charge. But for now, the sun is out, the garden chairs are creaking back to life, and even the pigeons look smug.

Long may it last. Or at least until Tuesday.
