Brent crude oil, the international benchmark, has surged, dragging pump prices along with it like a miserable dog through a rainy park.

Experts now say the average British driver could soon be coughing up an extra 5p per litre, possibly more. For the average motorist with a 55-litre tank, that’s an added £2.75 per fill-up – a hidden tax that helps no-one but shareholders and sheikhs.

But here’s the galling bit: there’s no shortage of supply. No embargo. No new refinery disaster. This is speculative pricing – driven not by scarcity, but by fear. The markets panic, the suppliers rub their hands, and we, the public, reach deeper into already hollowed-out pockets.

Once again, the UK government stays silent. No emergency VAT cut. No oil levy freeze. No hint of intervention. It’s as if they’re watching the pumps rise from behind a Westminster curtain, muttering, “Let them carpool.”

And yet we should ask: Why are we so vulnerable to these shocks? For a country with North Sea reserves and promises of a green energy future, we remain as dependent on OPEC drama as a toddler on Calpol.

There’s little comfort for the couriers, builders, nurses and night-shift workers who rely on their car to make a living. To them, this isn’t macroeconomics – it’s survival.

So the next time you fill up, stare at that glowing digital meter climbing past £1.60 a litre, and remember: it’s not your engine that’s being exploited – it’s your patience.
